NO MORE ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL YOGA: EMBRACE A PRACTICE TAILORED TO YOU

When I began my 200-hour yoga teacher training, I was captivated by the transformative potential of yoga. I learned about its profound benefits for the body, mind, and spirit—strength, flexibility, stress relief, emotional balance, and more. Yoga seemed like a miraculous tool for holistic health.

But as I started teaching, my perspective began to shift. Standing in front of groups of 10 to 15 people, guiding them through a single sequence, I noticed something didn’t feel quite right. Each person had a unique body, a distinct emotional state, and their own individual needs. Yet, we were all moving through the exact same practice.

How could one-size-fits-all yoga serve every person in the room?

This realization sparked a pivotal shift in my approach to teaching.

I began to understand that yoga isn’t about forcing individuals to fit into a predetermined mold—it’s about adapting the practice to meet the needs of the individual.

I made the decision to shift my focus to one-to-one sessions and small group classes, where I could offer personalized attention and truly adapt the practice to the person in front of me.

This change wasn’t just about tailoring poses; it was about creating a safe and supportive space where yoga could genuinely serve the individual. Whether someone was dealing with physical pain, emotional challenges, or simply needed a practice that matched their energy level, I wanted to meet them exactly where they were.

This approach felt not only more meaningful but also more aligned with the true essence of yoga—a practice that nurtures the whole person.

The Magic of Yoga Therapy

In yoga therapy, every session is thoughtfully designed to honor your unique needs, physiology, and emotional state. The goal is to help you move toward balance and wellness in a way that feels authentic and sustainable.

For example, let’s say someone comes to a session struggling with gastritis or other digestive issues. Certain poses, like deep twists or forward bends that put pressure on the abdomen, might exacerbate their discomfort. Instead, we would focus on gentle backbends that open the chest and relieve abdominal pressure, promoting digestion and alleviating discomfort.

Breathing exercises (pranayama) would also play a key role, helping to calm the nervous system, which in turn can reduce inflammation and support healthy digestion. These kinds of adjustments highlight the power of a personalized yoga practice—it’s not about doing the most challenging poses but about finding what works best for you.

Why Personalized Yoga Matters

Here are some of the key benefits of tailoring yoga practices to the individual:

1. Personalized Attention

In a one-on-one, the focus is entirely on you. I can observe your posture, movement, and energy levels, and design a practice that supports your goals—whether they’re physical, emotional, or mental.

Every pose, breath, and movement is chosen with intention, ensuring that your yoga practice is as effective and beneficial as possible.

2. Safety First

Yoga should never hurt. But in large group settings, it’s harder to ensure that each individual is moving in a way that’s safe for their body.

For example, if you have high blood pressure, certain poses—like inversions—could be risky. In a personalized session, I can modify the practice to avoid harmful movements and offer alternatives that support your well-being.

3. Enhanced Benefits

When yoga is tailored to your specific needs, the benefits are amplified. Whether you’re seeking greater relaxation, improved flexibility, or emotional resilience, a customized practice ensures that every moment on the mat is purposeful and impactful.

4. Emotional Support

Our mental and emotional states fluctuate from day to day. A personalized yoga practice can adapt to meet you where you are emotionally.

If you’re feeling anxious, we might focus on calming breathwork and restorative poses. If you’re feeling low energy, we can incorporate gentle movements to uplift your mood. Yoga therapy allows for this kind of fluidity, creating space for your emotional well-being.

5. Progress at Your Own Pace

In a group setting, there’s often an unspoken pressure to keep up with the pace of others. In a personalized session, there’s no rush.

You can move at your own speed, listening to your body and building your practice step by step. This not only enhances the effectiveness of your practice but also deepens your connection to yourself.

Empowerment Through Adaptation

The beauty of yoga therapy lies in its adaptability. It’s a practice designed to empower you, meeting you exactly where you are and supporting your journey toward balance and wellness.

For instance, if someone is recovering from an injury, yoga therapy can provide gentle movements that aid recovery without causing strain. If someone is struggling with stress or burnout, the practice might focus on grounding techniques and breathwork to restore inner calm.

This level of care and attention is what makes yoga therapy so transformative.

It’s not about achieving perfection or mastering complex poses—it’s about creating a practice that honors your unique body, mind, and spirit.

My Commitment to Personalization

As I’ve deepened my understanding of yoga therapy, I’ve become even more passionate about creating meaningful, individualized practices. I believe that yoga should be a tool for empowerment—a way for each person to find balance, resilience, and joy in their own life.

This commitment to personalization isn’t just a teaching philosophy; it’s a reflection of what I’ve learned through my own practice and experiences.

Yoga isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution—it’s a deeply personal journey, and my role as a teacher is to guide you on that path in a way that feels authentic and supportive.

Are You Ready to Explore Personalized Yoga?

If you’re curious about how yoga therapy could benefit you, I invite you to explore a one-to-one session. During our time together, we’ll evaluate your needs, including your physical, emotional, and mental state.

One of the most fascinating aspects of yoga therapy is how it reveals deeper patterns. For example, by observing your breathing pattern, we can uncover stored tension and unprocessed emotions. From there, we’ll design a practice that helps reestablish functional breathing, creating a foundation for greater balance and well-being.

Whether you’re dealing with specific challenges or simply want to deepen your connection to yourself, yoga therapy offers a safe and supportive space to explore what’s possible.

Yoga is for you. It’s not about fitting into a mold or achieving a perfect pose—it’s about honoring your journey and creating a practice that serves your unique needs. I’m here to support you every step of the way.

If this resonates with you, I’d love to hear from you. Let’s create a practice that empowers and uplifts you—one breath, one pose, one moment at a time.
